I can truly say that making photographs has enriched my life. We live in a very busy time. We hurry from here to there, always trying to get everything done. We never seem to stop long enough to see and enjoy the visual beauty that surrounds us. Photography has motivated me to take the time to see my world. It encourages me to constantly look for new places to explore and record what I see.
Leaving a nice warm bed before sunrise to take photographs requires effort. But as the sky lightens and the sun slowly pierces the horizon, everything is transformed. The landscape glows and I begin to discover exciting images. I am totally engrossed, trying to capture this beauty with my camera. My day has become enriched.
A natural extension of my enjoyment that comes from photographing landscapes is photographing gardens. I have always enjoyed visiting gardens of all types and sizes. When I lived in New York City my apartment was an easy walk from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens where I would spend hours during the summer months. My wife is an avid gardener and landscape designer who has created a wonderful garden here in Vermont to enjoy with my camera.
Although Iām no longer able to get around as easily as I once could, I still have several thousand photographs waiting for my attention. It will be a long time before I run out of photographs and the memories they evoke to enjoy.
I make photographs for my own pleasure, but I am always delighted when others enjoy my work as well. When you look at my photographs I hope you experience some of the pleasure that I did when making them.
I have been an amateur photographer for many years. I started doing serious photography in my early twenties. At that time I was working with film, all black and white. I had my own dark room and would do all my own processing. Developing skills at printing was very satisfying. In recent years I have been doing everything digitally. I still do my own processing, but now it is with a computer. Working digitally has made working with color much easier. We have lived in Vermont since 1995, a wonderful place for someone who enjoys landscape and garden photography.
