Lowell Snowdon Klock
I got my first SLR camera in 1977 when I lived in Paris. I played around with it but really got serious after I returned to the US in 1978. After obtaining as Associates Degree in Photography from Northern Virginia Community College (1984), I continued to pursue my love of photography after moving to Vermont in 1996.
An avid traveler, I get much of my material from my journeys, delighting in visually capturing the spirit and soul of places I visit, finding beauty in arches and columns, shapes and stones, often using unusual perspective. But I often find just as interesting material nearer home. History and preservation are extremely important to me. I am excited to find parts of ancient monuments, ruins, and architectural details—old wood and peeling paint are great!
I try to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through light, shadows, texture and interpretive angles. For example, rocks and stones can be transformed into lovely images depending on the light and texture. I look at something people may see, but don’t focus on. I also tend to shoot very tight, which can be a problem if you want to crop a picture. I like to take what I see. Lately I have been trying Digital Art which consists of taking a photograph and changing outlines, forms and colors to some degree—maybe a little, maybe a lot.
I began printing my own black and white (and color) photographs the darkroom when I lived in the Washington DC area where I had access to equipment I could use myself. After moving to Vermont in 1996, I did not have that access, so I began to use digital cameras. As better cameras, printers, paper and software became available, I started to use digital exclusively using Nikon cameras—the computer has become my darkroom. My work is largely printed on Moab Baryta paper on an Epson P600 Printer with archival ink.
At the Chaffee Gallery in Rutland, Vermont, I have exhibited in many member shows including three solo group exhibits. As member of the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester VT, I participated in their juried member shows as well as showing in small group and solo member exhibits. My work has also been shown at Town Hall Theater Gallery, the Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, and the Compass Gallery in Brandon. In May 2019, I participated in the 70+ Exhibit at the 77Gallery in Rutland and in August 2022 in the Art of the Gables in downtown Rutland. As a current juried member of the Brandon Artists Guild, I have had several solo shows as well as having participated in group member shows.
