Beth Murphy
No matter how “otherworldly” a work of art strikes one, we know it to have been made by a human being operating through their unique thoughts, emotions, instincts, and experiences. Professional and life practices have led to my fascination with these motivators and inspirations. Creating art is one way these gifts are translated via an artist’s chosen medium. My mixed media collages are the result of interactions between such human tendencies and nature. Using botanical materials as my primary medium, I venerate the abundance found in a garden, wood, waterside, field, or forest. I think of myself as a vessel which nature winds through, depositing a color or texture here and there, hinting at a story that I snap up, develop, and enrich. At times like a storm swirling with an energy that keeps it in motion, pausing only long enough to leave its impression; at others akin to a soft breeze slowly making its way up and around, over and under before gently departing. With each experience comes a fresh message that I am compelled to translate into a work of art.
In a world filled with controversy, challenges, and pressure, it is hoped that my collages provide a place of peaceful respite and contemplation. The bounty nature provides is honored by using only that which once removed will allow future growth and respecting any flora that is protected by leaving it untouched.
