I have always wanted to be an artist.

Ever since I was a little girl, I drew, and colored, and painted. I even went to college with the hope of becoming an artist. But I was afraid. Afraid of failure and that I wasn't good enough. I love children, so I became a Kindergarten teacher instead.

I should have been afraid of that, because it was very hard, but I loved it! And of course, I sang, and drew, and painted over a 32 year career as an educator.

After my retirement, and still fearful, I finally found the courage to take some classes and really make a commitment to studying, and drawing, and painting until a class in pastel sparked something in me!

Through both still life and landscape, I try to capture the essence of home—those small, yet significant moments and places that ground me and bring me comfort. I try to remember the lessons that so many five and six year olds taught me. To find wonder and amazement in the simplest things!

The Medium of Soft Pastel

Soft pastel sticks are a versatile and vibrant medium widely cherished by artists for their rich pigmentation and expressive range. Comprising of pure powdered pigment and a minimal amount of binder, pastel sticks offer a stunningly vivid color palette that can encompass everything from the most delicate tints to deep, saturated hues.

The tactile nature of pastels allows for a direct, hands-on approach to painting. I employ various techniques such as soft blending with fingers to achieve smooth gradients, layering to build depth, or applying intense strokes for dramatic effects. This immediacy and flexibility enable me to capture light and texture with remarkable detail and fluidity. I work on specially textured surfaces, which grip the pigment effectively.

I display my paintings under conservation glass which blocks 90% of UV rays and protect their vibrant surfaces from damage.
